Plan C
I had dozed off in the seat, but woke when I heard Sonya say, âDammit.â
We watched as the Navigator passed us and zipped faster down the highway, and around a blind curve.
"Where is she going?" I asked Sonya.
"Not sureâ¦"
"Is she bailing on you?"
"I wouldn't think soâ¦but maybe she's a little freaked out."
Phoebe asked, "You two didn't have a destination in mind?"
"Nope, we were just driving."
I met Sonya's eyes in the mirror. "So why is she freaked out?"
Sonya rested her elbows on the seats in front, leaning up to answer. "She only just found out that my father is sort ofâ¦a don."
"Don?" Phoebe said.
"As in Mafia," I offered.
"Oh, lovely."
"Yeah," Sonya said. "I grew up with it, I'm used to it, but she's sort of in over her head."
"So why did you two snatch me?â I asked. âI'm not a member of your father's organization."
"Well, we thought you were working for him."
"I was, though I didn't know it was him. I was hired by one of the goon squad."
"Yeah, well I can see that now. Our plan to extort money from daddy-dearest and get away failed miserably. He sent his minions after us. The ransom drop didn't go as planned. They knocked us around and took the money back. So then we got the bright idea to snatch you, after we followed you home and saw where you lived."
As Phoebe navigated the curving road, I half turned to glare at Sonya.
"Sorry." Sonya shrugged. "We were desperate. We're just trying to survive here. I wanted to get the hell out of my family and away from him. Takes money to do that."
"Did it also take burning down our house?"
She gave me a deep frown. "We didnât do that. It was on fire when we came down the stairs."
"Iâm supposed to believe you?"
"Honest. We had to snag you before we could ask your girlfriend here for money, didn't we?"
"Look," Phoebe interjected. "I'd give you money right now to leave us alone."
"Better than that," I added. "I can talk to Ginger. She has some friends in the federal marshal's office andâ"
"How is that going to help me? Get me arrested?"
"No, I mean, they have the witness protection program. Ginger went through the police academy with a guy whoâs now a federal marshal with WITSEC. You could be given a fresh start, relocated, in exchange for your testimony against your father."
Sonya sat back against the seat again. âIâve considered that before. Butâ¦â
Watching her in the mirror, I said, "I know it's extreme, but it may be your only way out."
"No, I'm actually liking the sound of it, now. Plan C. Canary. As in sing like aâ"
I exchanged a hopeful look with Phoebe. "Soâ¦if we can lasso in your friend Nola, maybe she can get in on that deal and the two of you can have that life you want after all."
Sonya leaned back up between the seats. "I think I'm in love with you."
"I know the feeling." Phoebe smirked.
